We want to double the size of our group in one month. Email info@miamiriverfoods.org to join us and get started supporting the local food economy!

Do you wish you could buy healthy food for your family - and invest that money back into our community and our local farms?

We do too!

That's why we started the Miami River Foods Project. We want to connect our local farmers with their neighbors - us! We love healthy food (organics taste better!), but we think that shipping a salad from California can't be good for the environment. We would also rather keep our money in the local economy, where it keeps working for our community, rather than sending it out to far-away food processors.

The Happy Box program at Fulton Farms does this very well, delivering a box of local, organic produce to our door every week - at a big savings to the environment as well as our pocketbooks. Now what about other things that are produced locally, like beef, chicken, turkey, milk, eggs, bread, honey, coffee, and more?

And since a lot of the people that are interested in eating healthy and locally are also interested in products that are better for the world, what about being able to easily buy products on Better World Shopper's recommended list from a source that we trust?

That's the plan. Buying foods and goods that are good for our community, good for the world, and easier on our wallets. A brick-and-mortar grocery store owned by and operated for the good of our community. You can help us get there!

  1. Sign up for our weekly email newsletter on the left! We'll keep you up to date on our progress, more great products in the community, and how you can help make a market a reality.
  2. Join the Beta Test program! Beta Club members are the foundation of our efforts to organize a community-owned grocery store. By ordering local and organic foods through our online market, Beta Testers help local farms build their capacity - and help the Project team cover startup expenses. There's no angel investor here - just one Beta Club member at a time. We'd love for you you to join us!
  3. Get involved! Our Co-op Organizing Team is now over 40 people strong! Would you like to join one of our teams working on Outreach, Design, Education, Branding, Grants, or the Beta Test program? Please email info@miamiriverfoods.org and let us know where your interests lie!

We'd also love to encourage you to have a look around the site. First, check out our recent newsletters on the left bar to learn more about the history of the project. We also have a blog on our What's New?page where you can stay up-to-date with the Project's recent activities. Our Calendar page has our upcoming events, as well as other food-related events in the Miami County area.

If you're interested in joining the Beta Test program, please check out our Join the Beta Test page, then send your name and phone number to info@miamiriverfoods.org to sign up for access to our online catalog.

Questions? Drop the Project team a note at info@miamiriverfoods.org.

We invite you to share your vision for a local foods market with us. We know we can't do it alone - maybe you'd like to join us?

Thanks for stopping by!

Interesting article in the USA Weekend paper insert this week. One of my favorite chefs so I just wanted to share. Click on the link below to see it.

I think this is a great idea.

I think this is a great idea. There are many local farmers of many types. However, one must be careful. Just because they are local, does not always ensure they are not using pesticides, hormones, etc...

Local farmers

Thanks for your comment. Yes, it's absolutely true that local growing methods come in many varieties. One of the reasons we think it's so important to support local production is that we want to increase the market for local and organic. Showing farmers that they can do more business - and make more money - by going organic is exactly the kind of market incentive we hope to create.

local markets

Hi Laura and Jake,

Great meeting last night! I was wondering if there could be an area within website where people could post where they are currently shopping for local produce. I love apples so I have been on a search for local orchards - after several telephone calls I struck gold w/ a neighbor when she offered four names of local fruit farms. I visited one in New Carlisle and was amazed at selection - and all locally grown. I passed list on to Colleen for the map, but thought others might be interested.

Local orchards

Hi Betsy!

I got some wonderful locally grown apples and cider at Siegel's Country Store in Covington earlier this fall. The most popular apples this man was offering were large, beautiful Enterprise variety, but he has some lovely heirloom apples and also quince available. The Enterprise were all sold out last weekend when I was there. Siegel's is a great resource for locally grown foods.

Forum

Hi Betsy,

Great idea! I've been looking into the forum settings on our web server and I plan to work on this tomorrow. I'll send out details on how to post in next week's newsletter.

Thanks!

local apples

you may want to try a local orchard out on Washington Rd...Dan Philipi...
he grows apples and I'm thinking he has a " do not spray" sign out on the road so the county won't spray his orchard. he's not too far from Concord School...a few houses down Washington to the North.

Forums page is up!

Please go to the Forums tab to post info about where you buy local foods now. Thanks for sharing your ideas!

Do not spray

Mmmm. I'll have to check this out. If you're friends with Dan, it would be great to let him know we'll be in touch. Or better yet, sign him up for our newsletter!
